New Video Alert: Kal Marks' A Functional Earth
Pizza rolls and Tang at the ready, I am transported to my best friend's couch and waiting for TRL to start. But the music is way better now.
Kal Marks is so fucking good, y’all. This band is one of my absolute favorites to catch live (THE SHEER POWER OF IT ALL!) and I can’t wait for their new full length, Wasteland Baby, coming out September 13th via Exploding in Sound.
Their video for A Functional Earth is out today and it’s a total stylistic departure from their last video, Insects, released just three weeks ago. Where Insects felt like a movie trailer complete with elaborate costumes and staging, A Functional Earth gives much more low key/low budget 90s music video vibes with plenty of transitional fades, fun effects, and interspersed performance footage. I’m here for it.
Musically, the song is driving and compelling; a kickass, noisy, post-punk jam that will leave you wanting more. This comes as zero surprise to anyone.
Do NOT miss this band on tour. You have been warned. I was lucky enough to catch them with PILE and Grocer a few months back at Machines With Magnets, one of my favorite intimate venues in Rhode Island and incidentally where the band recorded Wasteland Baby, and I’m still wiping the sweat from my brow.
